Nienke is a passionate and enthusiastic leader in the NGO landscape, specialised in leadership, management, marketing and fundraising. She started working for the NGO sector in 2004 when she wrote a master thesis on the different impacts of negative and positive ads for poverty reduction titled ‘Framing Helps’.
Following the research, Nienke was asked to join the marketing agency WWAV (RAPP) as a consultant. In almost 10 years, she worked with >80 different charities in the Netherlands and UK in all areas of marketing and fundraising and specialised in project management, major giving (match-making) and fundraising events.
In the last 11 years, Nienke has put all her dedication into working for War Child, an organisation that provides psychosocial support, protection and education to children affected by conflict. War Child is a unique and dynamic organisation always keen to look for new and innovative ways of involving people and raising funds. After being responsible for the marketing strategy and large integrated fundraising campaigns and events in the Netherlands, Nienke is nowadays the managing director for War Child in Germany.
Nienke studied International Business & Languages, and Social Sciences at the Free University in Amsterdam, and is co-author of the book ‘Major Gift Fundraising in 60 Minutes’.
After completing the Leaders of Tomorrow course in 2022, Nienke joined the trainers team of LOT for CEE in Modra, Slovakia. Since 2025, she is also part of the LOT trainers team in Germany.
Besides her work for War Child, Nienke is a consultant for NGOs and a speaker at the International Fundraising Congress (IFC), Deutscher Fundraising Kongress (DFK) and Dutch Fundraising Day. Every Monday evening she is a volunteer facilitator in an asylum centre with the mental health program TeamUp for a group of teenagers who have fled their own country. TeamUp, based on sports and games, supports children and teenagers to deal with their emotions and experiences and to grow their social skills like self-confidence, trust and cooperation.
